The 2020-21 school year will mark the tenth anniversary of Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha’s relationship with PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO TV program.

 

From the beginning, we—the smallest public charter school in Hawaii—were the only school to continuously deliver stories that not only met PBS national standards for content and production values but were also in bilingual format. Every story has been subtitled in either olelo Niihau or English.

 

In the first year, we also hosted the HIKI NO show. This was the first time any news show had been broadcast in any form of the Hawaiian language, another first for Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha students.

PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO program won the Edge national award for “Innovation In Educational Programming" in 2012.

Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha students' contribution to HIKI NO, “Archers To Art,” was the lead story for the show’s prime-time slot at 7:30 on Thursday evening, October 24, 2019.

Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha has come a long way with PBS Hawaii and the HIKI NO program since 2011. We continue to teach HIKI NO video production with an introduction to broadcast journalism in a hands-on, project-based environment. In the studio at Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha, every student gets a chance to be part of HIKI NO.
